Canterbury farms selling well in 2023

Canterbury’s rural property market has had an outstanding season.

Despite gloomy economic forecasts, and significant weather events in other parts of the country, Canterbury farmers have been favoured with ideal climatic conditions this year, which has led to a number of farm sales in the region, says Canterbury Real Estate Manager for PGG Wrightson Real Estate Peter Crean

“A good growing season generally leads to farmers feeling positive, which many take as encouragement to buy or sell land. This year has borne that confidence out.

"We have been entrusted with a great range of high-quality Canterbury properties to offer to the market in recent months."

“When vendor expectations are realistic and when farms are presented well, motivated buyers will come forward. Most of the rural properties we were engaged to take to the market earlier in the season have sold well, and the autumn is continuing that trend,” he says.

Some recent Canterbury farm sale highlights include:

  • Two well located smaller Southbridge cropping properties went to auction, one sold under the hammer and the other sold the next day.
  • Glenford, Hawarden, a 126 hectare immaculately presented partly irrigated dairy support unit and cattle finishing farm sold to Amuri buyers.
  • A versatile 130 hectare Oxford property, fully irrigated, with options for dairy support, finishing or cropping sold to Mid Canterbury farmers.
  • Cromdale Station, Lees Valley, a 2181 hectare medium high country property sold to a central Canterbury farming family.
  • Whinfields, Sefton a 128 hectare finishing and cropping property sold to a local farmer.
  • Inniskillen, Culverden, a 261 hectare dairy farm and separate 77 hectare support unit sold to local farmers.
  • A 378 hectare hill block with a forestry consent sold to local farmers.

Although interest from outside the region and investors is keeping values buoyant, most properties are selling to others farming in Canterbury, with the majority in the same district and seeking to consolidate their holdings.

Peter Crean said a handful of other highly desirable Canterbury farms had come onto the autumn market and were still available, several offered with deadlines in the coming weeks, including properties with options for sheep and beef, dairy, cropping, carbon and forestry.
