Longlands – rare ‘millionaire mile’ equine gem sells well

A well-established equine property deep in one of the country’s most prestigious locations sold well in early October.

Offered to the market by Martin Lee of PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Cambridge, Longlands Stud is an 18.76 hectare Maungatautari, Karapiro property situated eight kilometres south east of Cambridge. On what is known locally as ‘millionaire mile,’ Martin describes it as a rare gem.

“In the immediate presence of some of New Zealand’s most eminent equine names, the likes of Trelawney and Chequers, the appeal of Longlands Stud is self-evident. Bordering the majestic Waikato River and adjacent to vibrant Lake Karapiro, in location and presentation this an extraordinarily desirable property,” he says.

First presented to the market in the summer, it attracted plenty of interest.

“Several parties inspected it, though Longlands is a property at the premium end of a specialist sector. Such properties jealously held, and only rarely available for sale, says Martin, who described this as ‘a life defining acquisition.’

“Only a few are really set up to make the most of such a high end offering. We found a purchaser in that category, who saw its value and vision, and will continue Longlands’ predominant equine use as a thoroughbred stud and breeding farm,” he says.

Held since 1987 by owners who evolved a vision to bring it from a deer farm and beef fattening unit to its current much admired state, Longlands’ contour and fertility make it perfect for horses: growing grass year round produces a clear and obvious benefit.

At the heart of Longlands’ equine operations, a barn-style stable block houses eight internal and nine external stables, plus a workshop, broodmare crush, tractor shed, hay barn, cattle yards, and a horse loading ramp.

Martin describes the facilities as practical and centrally located to the farm operation.

“These are carefully designed and expertly crafted to ensure all horses housed here are well cared for, with every consideration around training, breeding, and riding fully accounted for,” he says.

Holding firm to its pre-equine days, Longlands’ vendors maintained extensive grazing areas and modern cattle handling facilities.

All paddocks are fully horse-proof and laid out to enable clear lines of sight across the whole of Longlands without needing to leave the house.

Down a majestic tree-lined drive in immaculately tended grounds graced by mature English species that provide shade and beauty, Longlands’ four bedroom, three bathroom, plus office homestead is ideal for families requiring room to grow, or professionals envisaging a peaceful work-from-home environment. A self-contained sleepout effortlessly accommodates guests or extended family.

“Our vendors loved living in this immaculate property, the setting for many joyful family occasions, including parties, celebrations and a wedding. It has been a family destination, which they describe as everybody’s happy place.”

Bordering the river and adjoining the lake, Longlands’ location is at the heart of various water events and outdoor activities, and Cambridge enjoys the buzz of hosting elite level cycling and rowing. Benefiting from its inland locality, the district is known for its gentle climate, with reasonably mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers.

Longlands sits 140 kilometres south of Auckland Airport. Proximity to Cambridge, Hamilton, and the Waikato expressway ensures easy access to the culture, schools, and amenities of the surrounding towns.

A large new equine development between Longlands and Cambridge attests to the locality’s ongoing alignment with the thoroughbred racing sector, further underlining the reputation Cambridge has as New Zealand’s equine capital, internationally recognised for producing world-class horses.

Longlands was on the market for approximately eight months.
