Born and bred in rural Otago – Milton and Oamaru - Matt and his young family came ‘home’ to the heartland in 2020. Since then, he’s produced the tv show ‘Nadia’s Farm’, written two books, been the inaugural ambassador for the Rural Support Trust, travelled the country speaking and MC’ing, and followed his dream – farming 30 hectares at Chatto Creek in Central Otago. The son of a Wrightson stock agent and part-time farmer, young Matt loved farming more than any other kid in the classroom. Passion that hasn’t faded. Nowadays, he breeds Southdowns, Shorthorns, rocks, rabbits and as a keen rural and agriculture advocate – he’s often interviewed on the radio or for a magazine or newspaper. As you’d expect for a man who has been ‘on the road’ for twenty years, he has phenomenal connections and cobbers right across the country.
In his ‘spare’ time, the former Otago Country rugby player enjoys farming and kids sport. Matt heads up Matakanui-Clyde-Roxburgh Combined junior rugby and he also coaches his sons, Bede and Finn, play both rugby and soccer. You’ll often see the father-of-three on the side-line, barracking with youthful enthusiasm, wishing he was still playing. Matt also spends a lot of time hosting community events – the ‘Central Otago Winter Crop Competition’, quiz nights in the Maniototo, ‘It’s in the Bag, Alexandra’, or ‘Matakanui’s Got Talent’ – if it’s a good cause – Matt will roll his sleeves up and get involved.
Through everything he’s done, Matt has developed a reputation for being a brilliant communicator – for being up front and honest. He’s found his piece of paradise in central and he’s living his dream. Now, he wants to help other people realise theirs.
