Tēnā koutou,
As we move through Poutū-te-rangi / March, we are pleased to share the next edition of Whenua Kite Hou—our ongoing īmēra from the PGG Wrightson Real Estate and Iwi teams, created in partnership and with a continued focus on supporting opportunities for Iwi Māori.
Recently there has been positive momentum across the primary sector with new investment through the Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund, aimed at helping unlock the potential of whenua Māori in horticulture. The funding is intended to support infrastructure such as packhouses, irrigation and new plantings, helping Māori landowners move into higher-value production while strengthening regional economies and creating employment opportunities. On the ground we are seeing growing focus on currently owned whenua and the possibility of diversification by adding small horticulture / live-stock blocks, but also how that whenua could be used / re purposed to create tourism opportunities through guided or self-lead walking treks – showing off our beautiful whenua as well as creating additional revenue streams.
At the heart of this edition remains mātauranga Māori—the knowledge, values and perspectives that guide how we work alongside iwi, hapū and whānau. The collaboration between the PGG Wrightson Iwi and Real Estate teams continues to shape this newsletter, ensuring the opportunities shared here are viewed not just commercially, but also through the lens of kaitiakitanga, kotahitanga and long-term stewardship of whenua. Our aim is to provide useful insights and opportunities that support iwi aspirations while strengthening the connection between people, land and enterprise.
“Toitū te whenua, toitū te tangata” – When the land is sustained, the people thrive.
Ngā mihi nui.
