Lifestyle Collection - Neighbours give Rotokauri property its 'WOW' factor

November 2019

Most people would think twice about neighbours who behave like animals in a zoo.

Not the Appels: they have lived on a 1.44 hectare lifestyle property next to Hamilton Zoo in Rotokauri since 2008.

Now the Appels are ready to sell and pass on their lifestyle, and exotic neighbours, to new owners.

“We love having the sights and sounds of the African veldt right on the doorstep.

“When you are in a rural location you quickly learn to live alongside nature. For us, that has gone up to another whole level as we have been able to appreciate different animals, watching giraffes out of the kitchen window, seeing tigers over the back fence and listening to monkeys chattering away while we sit on the deck on a peaceful spring evening,”
Sharon Appel says.

John and Sharon Appel bought the block in 2008, built the four bedroom home and have lived there since with children Caitlin and Campbell, now 16 and 13, plus Simba the dog, cats Lippy and Cooper, cows Irene and Fleur,
and 12 chickens, plus rooster Sonny Bill Junior.

John, originally from Idaho in the United States, met Sharon, then a registered nurse at Waikato Hospital, while he was in New Zealand in 1996 on a gap year from his studies in physical therapy.

After a brief long distance friendship when John returned to pick up his study, Sharon headed to London for a long planned OE, with a stopover on the way to visit John for a white Christmas. She never made it to London and
just over a year after meeting in New Zealand, the couple were married.

They stayed in the United States as John completed his master’s degree in physical therapy. Then, while back in New Zealand in 2001 for a visit, John found himself suddenly and spontaneously buying a physiotherapy
business and the Appels settled back in New Zealand the following year.

Six years later the opportunity to buy land and live on a lifestyle block arose, as Sharon explains.

“With a busy and thriving physiotherapy business the chance to enjoy rural living came to fruition. Being on this property has allowed us to bring up the children with space, animals, an orchard and yet still close to the city for jobs
and schools.

“Our children have enjoyed many adventures on the property. It is a great place to create happy memories,” she says.

They have engaged Angela and Russell Thomas of PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Hamilton, to offer the property to the market.

Angela Thomas says it is an excellent location. “At approximately eight kilometres from downtown Hamilton, though essentially in the country, this rural enclave is a special lifestyle sanctuary, with its unique outlook over the zoo
providing endless wonder.

“A north-facing deck and sunny indoor living environment optimise the views, making the home a real hit for entertaining. Wrapped in double glazing and positioned for solar gain, the easy-care brick residence was custom-built
by Sharon and John to provide a busy family with relaxing space and room to grow.

“It has plenty of room for a trailer, boat and guests, while the motocross track, which has been carved into the landscape, plus three paddocks supporting a few beefies, open up some of the opportunities that draw many
families to lifestyle living,” she says.
