Productive, modern Central Otago cherry orchard for sale
After 45 years in horticulture in Central Otago, one of the industry’s most respected advisers, along with his wife, set out to establish their own orchard.
Based on their expert understanding of the latest planting and growing technology, over the past five years they have turned a lifestyle property comprising paddocks and a house into a state of the art orchard that has already produced its first two enviable crops of export cherries.
Neil Bulling of PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Cromwell is selling the 4.8 hectare property in a joint listing with colleagues Jo Nieper and Mike Direen.
“Aiming to grow large, quality export cherries, while mitigating the risk of seasonal rain and ensuring protection from birds and frost, the couple installed rain covers on their Upright Fruiting Offshoot, or UFO system. UFO allows for ease of picking and overall management, meaning this orchard is a one-person operation.
“A quality four-bedroom home and sleep-out nestled in mature gardens with extensive tree planting and the brilliant Central Otago climate make this a highly desirable place to live and work. A generous range of orchard plant and equipment is available for sale, and the return from this season’s crop will be in the new owners’ bank account by February 2022,” says Neil.
Utilising an irrigation pond, storing local scheme water, two hectares of the property are planted in 3600 Lapins and Centennial cherry trees, while in a few years new plantings of specimen trees will complement the 360 degrees of outstanding Central Otago views the property enjoys.
